Amerika'da 6 sene kalan Şaşmaz, 2001 yılında bir süreliğine ailesini ziyarete geldiği sırada geri dönüş uçak biletini 11 Eylül 2001 tarihine aldı. Amerikada yaşanan saldırılar sebebiyle uçağı Amerika'ya varamadan geri dönen Şaşmaz, sonradan ailesinin çekincesi ve ısrarı üzerine Amerika'ya dönmekden vazgeçti. Osman Sınav'ın "Bir dizi düşünüyoruz, seni de başrolde düşünüyorum" sözlerine, düşünmek istediğini söyleyen Şaşmaz, bir ay sonra teklifi kabul etti. Hayatını tamamen değiştirdiğini söylediği Kurtlar Vadisi projesine böyle başlayan Necati Şaşmaz, özel hayatının kalmadığını, "Beni sadece Ankara'da ismimle çağırıyorlar, İstanbul'da herkez Polat diyor" sözleri ile dile getirdi.
